Unprepared Mom
Living in New York is different than the West Coast in many ways, the one I dealt with today was kindergarten cut off is on Dec 31st, making Ella old enough to start in September. Yikes! I'm not old enough to have a kindergartner...oh, wait... yeah I am!! At first I was totally against it, but then learned that the morning session goes from 8:30am -11:15am . Just like a preschool would be, right? Here you have to register in March and that's what I did, just in case I decided to put her in. It was so weird to enter this school with huge kids running around, hallways with artwork, large double doors...I wasn't ready for this! They spent a little one on one time with Ella to see her abilities and she a great time. We have decided if we put her in this September we would have her do it again the following year once we move. She will be 5 1/2 then and be the same age as the rest of the kindergartners. I'm looking into a few preschools (kind of spendy here) and will be taking a school tour soon. I just don't know what to do! Any advice for this unprepared mom?

Wow, ella a little school girl?!?! :) I think I would put her in...it would be free right? I think your plan of doing it again next year would be great (will you still be in NY? I lose track of time) Did the teachers say anything about her abilities while you were there? I am sure she'd do great, whichever you choose. Man am I a lot of help or what?!
The next year we might be near you!! Any neighbors moving let us know! We get something in the mail about her screening. I'm interested to see what they observed. How was your trip? New post please, I'm tired of looking at the teeth x-rays!
it's no fun having kids with a borderline birthday! california's cutoff is Dec. 2nd, and rylee's b-day is nov. 10th... when i toured some preschools they told me that the trend is to send them later. there can be an eighteen month age gap in kindergartners. if i send rylee she'll be 4 and competing with 6 year olds! but you hate to hold them back if their competent and ready. my advice for you is: 1) has ella been in any preschool before? and how did she do? 2) wait and here what the teachers say about her abilities 3) if the teachers think she is ready, maybe you should go ahead and send her because it will save you way more money vs. preschool and if she has to repeat on the west coast when you move she won't realize she's repeating because it's a whole new school with new kids, etc. i think kids struggle with repeating grades when they KNOW they're repeating and see that all their friends have moved on. this won't be the case for ella. if she doesn't know, she'll just get an extra good foundation. some elementary schools in california even offer 2 year kindergarten programs especially geared to kids with late birthdays. IF the abilities teachers don't think she's ready, definitely don't send her. it will be no loss on your part since the west coast deadline is later anyway.
ps-i don't really know what i'm talking about, just babbling...
You better be closer to me...I have been waiting, PATIENTLY might I add! Trip was good...covered a lot of miles in a few days but it was very nice!! I'll have to post more later today!
